Passion Fruit Roots
Passion Fruit has a history. The tropical fruit is the basis for the pornstar martini but that's actually a misnomer.
European missionaries named the berry passion fruit. Legend has it the missionaries saw symbols of the passion of Christ in its flowering vines--this according to American chef Alice Waters in her book Chez Panisse Fruit.
Passion fruits are grown in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii and are in season from August to November, although they are available usually year round.
Ingredients
I didn't want to deal with seeds in my drink or straining the seeds so to keep this drink easy to make, I use passion fruit puree, available at most liquor stores and in the mixers area of grocery stores.
Most importantly for those of you in colder climates like me, no need to wait until passion fruits are in season to make this wonderful tropical drink.
Also, you can juice a passion fruit if you can find the fruits in your local produce aisle but each fruit only yields about a tablespoon of juice.
Passion fruit puree, pineapple juice, a squeeze of lemon and vodka make a delicious tropical cocktail that's easy to make year round.
Recipe Tips
I used Tito's in this recipe because that's what I had in the liquor closet.
But, you could amp up the flavor by replacing the plain vodka with passion fruit vodka or vanilla vodka.
If you're more of a rum girl, feel free to use rum instead of vodka. I'm sure tequila would be an okay stand-in as well.
Make a passionfruit mocktail by replacing the vodka with a seltzer water or a Sprite.
No lemon juice? Swap out with lime juice.
Garnish Your Tropical Cocktail
If you don't have any passion fruits to use, try a pineapple spear or a pineapple leaf.
You could also garnish with a lemon or lime wedge or a cocktail cherry.

Recipe
Passion Fruit Cocktail
Passion Fruit Cocktail is going to be your new favorite summer drink. This tropical beverage includes passion fruit puree shaken with pineapple juice, a fresh squeeze of lemon juice and vodka.
Ingredients
- 3 oz vodka or vanilla vodka
- 3 oz pineapple juice (fresh if possible)
- 3 oz passion fruit juice or puree (I used passion fruit puree)
- 20 ml fresh lemon juice
- Passion fruits sliced in half for garnish (optional). Float Β½ in each drink (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare your mise en place--juice the fruit if using fresh, juice the lemon and slice the passion fruits.
- Fill a cocktail shaker or mason jar full of ice.
- Measure pinapple juice, passion fruit juice or puree and vodka and pour into your cocktail mixing apparatus.
- Shake really, really hard until the shaker gets so icy cold your fingers hurt.
- Pour into two glasses. I actually used a coupe glass for this drink the first time I made it then used fancy rocks glasses. You could use any clean drinking container you own.
Notes
Passion fruits are dear, at least on my salary at the newspaper. I think I paid $7 each for them? Plus I ddin't want to mess with extracting tghe seeds.
So I used this passion fruit puree, which was perfect.
Refrigerate the leftover puree. Drizzle leftover passion fruit puree on plain Greek yogurt for breakfast, over ice cream, or on top of a fruit salad. Or add a tablespoon or two to a plain selzter water.
You can also use passion fruit puree to make curd, a mousse or add it your a.m. smoothie.
