We all have that friend. You know.
She is an effortless hostess.
Everyone marvels at the dishes she seemingly throws together last minute.
You will be that friend when you learn how to make these fancy party grapes.
You don't even need a fancy party to make them.
Take them on a picnic or out on your boat or to the beach.
I've made up a little rhyme for how to make them: poke, soak, roll.
You'll poke the grapes with a fork or a toothpick, just randomly, a few holes in most of them.
Soak them overnight in Prosecco or another sparkling wine.
Roll them in sanding sugar or sparkly crystal sugar and serve.
If you're going on a picnic, maybe make Rosemary Chicken Sandwiches to take along.
Ingredients
- Seedless grapes (any variety fine just make sure they're fresh and seedless)
- Sparkling wine or your favorite spirit
- Sanding sugar or sugar crystals (One of my favorite sanding sugars)
How to Make These Grapes
Drain any residual alcohol.
Pour sanding sugar onto a plate or parchment paper.
Add grapes and roll them until thoroughly coated.
These grapes are best being rolled in sanding sugar instead of granulated sugar.
Sanding sugar has slightly larger crystals than granulated sugar so you get a crunchier coating.
How to Get Sugar to Stick to Fruit
You can either dampen the grapes with water before you roll in them in sugar.
Or, you can coat the fruit in a bit of egg white wash.
To do that, beat an egg white with maybe a tablespoon of water and a pinch of salt.
The salt will make break down the proteins in the egg white and make it easier to "paint" the grapes before their roll in the sugar.
Storing and Making Ahead
You can make these sugared grapes the day before you plan to serve them or the morning of.
Don't make them any further ahead than that.
Store any leftover grapes in the fridge but plan to eat them up within three days of making them.
What to Serve with These Grapes?
Salmon Escabeche (Easy Make-Ahead Dish) or Spicy Shrimp Nachos or Best Salsa Recipe Using Canned Tomatoes (Just 5 Ingredients!) would be great to serve with this fruit side dish and of course a platter of cheese and crackers and perhaps olives.
