    Desserts for a Funeral

Updated: Sep 3, 2025 by Jennifer OsbornThis post may contain affiliate links.

Funeral desserts are their own kind of magic. They show up quietly on a folding table in a church basement or someone’s kitchen and say, I see your grief, and I brought sugar.

What Should I Bring to a Funeral?

Not sure what dessert to bring to a funeral? I created a list of comforting, easy-to-make funeral desserts that travel well, feed a crowd, and can maybe sit out in a church basement for hours.

A good funeral dessert needs to:

    • Be easy to make (you might be grieving too)
    • Sit out for hours
    • Feed a crowd
    • Travel well
    • Offer some comfort—maybe even spark a memory

This is the time to bust out the full-fat cream cheese, the real butter, the best chocolate.

Maybe even that slightly ridiculous recipe your late Grandma used to make that starts with a box of Twinkies?

Bright Citrus Desserts (Because Grief Needs Zing)

    • Nellie & Joe’s Key Lime Pie – 3 ingredients. Cold, tart, creamy. A fan favorite.
    • Lemon Poke Cake – Moist, sunny, and sits like a champ on a folding table.
    • Lemon Bars with Graham Cracker Crust – That tangy-sweet balance? Perfect.

    Cozy, Classic Comfort

pan of gooey butter cake with a measuring cup of powdered sugar and slices of cake around pan.
Make this St. Louis style gooey butter cake from scratch to see what St. Louisans have been hollering about for decades.
    • Gooey Butter Cake – From scratch or cake mix, this is grief-soothing gold.
    • Creamy Pumpkin Pie – Yes, even out of season. Custardy, lightly spiced, and deeply nostalgic.
    • Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting – Warm and cozy. Skip the cranberries and just bring the flavor.

Crowd-Pleasers You Can Grab & Go

a pile of brownie mix cookies on a pink plate.
    • Congo Bars – Blondies loaded with chocolate and walnuts. Walkable. Snackable. Comfort in square form.
    • Brownie Mix Cookies – Easy, rich, and flexible. Add M&M’s or go classic chocolate chunk.
    • Toffee Cookies – Like chocolate chip cookies but with chopped Heath bars or toffee bits.
    • S'mores Bars-Graham cracker crust, chocolate and marshmallow is the ultimate prescription for grief.

    Low-Effort, High-Love Desserts

A hand holds a Rice Krispies treat topped with colorful sprinkles above a stacked plate of more treats.
    • Rice Krispie Treats – For the kids. And the adults who’ll sneak three. No shame.
    • Twinkie-Based Desserts – If there was ever a time to try that semi-absurd recipe you found in your grandma's recipe box, it’s now.
    • Vintage Sugar Cookies – A reliable crowd-pleaser. Soft, sweet, and nostalgic.

Maybe (Just Maybe) a Healthy Option

Fruit skewers with grapes, blackberries, and blueberries, alongside diced fruit on a white background.
    • Fruit Skewers – Not my first pick for a funeral. But someone will appreciate them.

Bonus: Dessert That Travels Like a Dream

    White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Pie

    • White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Pie – Fancy without the fuss. Cream cheese, lemon juice, sweetened condensed milk, and frozen raspberries. Gorgeous and easy.

You don’t have to make something fancy. You don’t have to bake at all. But if you do? Make something that feels like a hug. Grief is messy, but dessert is dependable.

If all you have in you is a box mix and a disposable pan—that’s more than enough.

Desserts to make from almost nothing might give you more ideas for what to take to a funeral or another gathering like a picnic or a graduation.
