Salsa using canned tomatoes means a fresh, delicious salsa no matter the time of year, even in winter.
This recipe uses just one 14-ounce can of diced tomatoes.
You know what that means? Even in the dead of winter in a blizzard, you can make homemade salsa.
If you're looking for a flavorful marinade, you might try cuban mojo marinade.
How to Make Salsa with Canned Tomatoes
So, I'm incredibly fussy about my salsa.
I tend to only like the salsa I make myself, and the salsa at my favorite Mexican restaurant.
My absolute favorite recipe is made with canned tomatoes.
Serve with tortilla chips, cut up veggies, pita chips or these delicious keto crackers.

If you wanted to add a bit more zing to this recipe or a soup or pasta you're making, you could try adding oregano oil.
Ingredients for Pantry Salsa
What Ingredients Do I Need for Salsa with Canned Tomatoes?
- 1 14-ounce can of diced tomatoes
- ¼ cup chopped onion, (I like red, use whatever you have)
- ¼ cup cilantro
- 2 jalapeno peppers (more if you like really hot salsa)
- juice of half a lime, about a tablespoon
- salt to taste
You'll also need a device, such as a blender, food processor or stick blender to puree the ingredients. Unless you want to leave it chunkier, that's your choice.
I use a Cuisinart food processor that I've owned for eons, similar to this one.
But, I've also made this salsa with a Kitchen Aid Stick Blender and it turned out well but it's a lot smoother. I'm not a chunky salsa fan so I like a blender salsa.
If you don't have a food processor, you can just chop everything finely using a sharp knife and a cutting board.
I'm using this knife for chopping fruits and vegetables and I really like it.
I have small hands and it fits well in my paw.
And it's nice and sharp but not so sharp you'll cut a finger off.

You can really use any type of canned tomatoes for salsa since you'll be blending them with jalapeño and cilantro in a food processor.
I prefer a 14.5-ounce can of petite diced tomatoes but since you'll be pureeing the tomatoes in a food processor, use whatever you already have whole, peeled tomatoes, whatever.
You could probably even use a can of already pureed tomatoes if you like a smooth texture.
How to Use Up Leftover Salsa
- If you have leftover salsa, you can combine a half cup with tomato soup to make a really delicious Latin-inspired tomato soup.
- Serve with warm tortillas before dinner.
- Make a cheese salsa quesadilla in a skillet.
- Serve along side Spicy Shrimp Nachos
- Top beans and rice with a spoonful of salsa.
- Add leftover salsa to slow cooker chicken dish and make burritos.
- Pour salsa over a pound of firm, white-fleshed fish like cod and bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 350.
- Top a fish sandwich with a tablespoon of fresh salsa.
- Chips and salsa go great with Slow Cooker Ribs.
- After eating a spicy salsa, you'll want a cool and creamy dessert like Mojito Cheesecake or Nellie & Joe's Famous Key Lime Pie Recipe (Just 3 Ingredients) or perhaps St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake (aka The Cake You Won't Stop Eating).
If you like salsa, you might like Salsa Dip.
