Is Misfits Market Worth It? (Get a Misfits Referral Code)

Organic fruits and vegetables delivered to your house weekly or every other week, is Misfits Market worth it?

    Yes.

Here's a code for you to use: COOKWME-NU2FSQ

I think this produce box is a good value if you're a cook and/or a vegetarian or are really trying anything you can to eat more vegetables and fruits.

I usually order a Mischief box, which is the smaller of the two choices.

The Mischief box contains around 10 to 13 pounds of organic mixed fruits and vegetables for $22 plus shipping, which is $4.50 for my address.

Or, if you have a larger family or you're feeding a passel of vegetarians, the Madness box might be better for you. That's $35 for a delivery of 18 to 22 pounds of produce.

    Is Misfit Market Worth It?

    Misfit Promo Code COOKWME-NU2FSQ

Misfits Market delivers ugly, but otherwise perfectly edible fruits and vegetables.. Our mission is to combat food waste and provide affordable, healthy produce to the world. ... in fields or get thrown away at the store, simply because they don't look good. --Misfit Market

This was our first delivery. Everything except the lettuce was in pristine condition, which I surmise helps hook you into keeping your subscription going. This box, since I had a 50 percent off code for joining, was an exceptional value. It was $15 with shipping.

If you're housebound, this might be a good idea if you have trouble getting to a market on a regular basis or you're living in a vegetable desert.

But even then, this isn't a perfect solution.

You're getting a hodge podge of leftover produce that someone ostensibly deemed unfit to sell.

And I do mean hodge podge. I've been making a lot of soup.

The deliveries come weekly or every two weeks.

I went with two weeks. You can also pause or cancel your subscription on the website very easily.

    Misfits with Meat

However, the produce company that urged the sale and eating of ugly produce began offering all of the things you might find at a grocery store last fall.

You can buy seafood, ground beef, chickens, pantry items, snacks, bread and even cheese.

We've ordered meat and fish from Misfits several times now and have been happy with the quality and the value.

We've ordered hake, cod, shrimp and salmon and it's all been good.

Our favorite is the Big Easy Foods wild caught Gulf shrimp. The price, $7.99 a pound is just slightly cheaper than we'd pay in Maine.

The ground turkey is $4.99 a pound, which is less than Maine grocery stores.

Keep in mind that we're at the end of the line here on the Maine coast for groceries. If you're in the middle of the country, you may be able to get quality groceries with organic items for much, much less than we can.

    Misfits Shipping Costs

Don't forget you'll need to pay shipping.

Shipping is a flat rate by zip code that starts at $6.99 per order.

I don't think we've ever paid more than $10 for shipping and we're in the very far corner of the country in New England.

And keep in mind, the convenience that comes from having food delivered on your door step is usually worth the fee.

Misfits Market packages all of the food with cold packs so meat and fish arrive frozen.

Here's a screenshot of an order I received on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022.

Misfits Market is delivering an order of fish and a couple of vegetables to us on Wednesday.

While I really like the company that started out with a mission to recover ugly and misshapen produce from waste, Misfits Market has begun selling organic meat and fish along with misfit pantry items--you know a scratch and dent can or box.

Tips for Your Produce Box Subscription

    Eat Quickly

If you receive lettuce or other salad greens, eat them the minute the box arrives. Seriously. We've gotten two heads of lettuce and they were wilted beyond the point of being edible by  the next morning.

    Try Customizing Your Order

Misfits will send you an email letting you check off preferences starting with the second delivery.

However, just because you check off your preferences on the order form doesn’t mean they are going to arrive.

I was desperate for parsnips but l but didn’t get any.

I also checked off several herbs. None of those arrived. And frankly, considering the state that the lettuce arrived, it’s probably for the best.

In fact, I'm updating this post in January 2022, a year after I started order the produce box subscription and I have learned a few things.

Don't click any of the boxes for greens or herbs. They just don't make it any remotely fresh condition. Keep in mind, I live at the end of the known universe on the Maine coast. That may be a factor. If you're in Virginia or NYC, maybe lettuce and herbs would arrive okay.

Keep track of when your produce box is supposed to arrive.

Make room in your vegetable crisper two days before. I say two days because sometimes your box will arrive a day early.

Also, you don't want the box sitting out for more than say eight hours.

The company will put a frozen reusable ice pack in the box but by the time it arrives to you, if you live on the coast of Maine like me, the ice pack will just be cool--not cold.

Don’t order a produce subscription if you don’t like to cook.

I wouldn’t order this if I was a brand new cook or if I didn’t like hunting for recipes.

You never know what’s going to arrive so you have to be flexible with a capital F.

There’s something to be said for having plenty of vegetables on which to practice but it might be overwhelming if you’re not used to cooking.

Plus you need to be creative because there will be dribs and drabs of vegetables that you need to use up. You won’t always have enough of everything to make one dish or side dish.

Examine Each Vegetable and Fruit Immediately

These are misfits and they are traveling to reach you so grab each one and give it a good look. My aforementioned celeriac had a soft spot on one end that I wouldn't have noticed if I'd just plopped it in the vegetable crisper. I just cut the spot away.

If you do get a vegetable or fruit that's rotten, contact Misfit and they'll arrange a replacement vegetable or credit on your next delivery.

Is a produce subscription box a good value?

I think it is considering the vegetables and fruits arriving on your doorstep are organic.

I don’t usually buy organic produce unless it’s summer. My favorite farmers, Paul and Karen Volckhausen who own HappyTown Farm in Ellsworth grow organic vegetables. Their lettuce is Amazing.

    Misfits Market Sourcing Philosophy

    Is Misfits Market Good?

We, the husband, teenage boy and I have been pleased with the quality of the produce. The few things that arrived inedible, like the lettuce, were in the minority.

We did a get a yellow pepper that had been knifed but our box had a knife slash in it so I think it was a delivery issue.

Check out the Misfits Market shop

What I’ve cooked with my produce box delivery:

-Sauteed green beans using this recipe and served it for a weekend lunch with steamed rice.

-Made a pot of Southwest Vegetarian Soup

-Roasted a Big batch of vegetables using my favorite recipe for grilled vegetables

-Made salads with random toppings of vegetable like snow pea pods

    -Roasted peppers for a soup

-Roasted carrots, which were really, really good. I could tell a difference between these organic carrots that arrived and the bunch of non-organic that I grab at the supermarket.

The produce box also includes fruit.

We’ve received lemons, apples, pears, mandarins, grapes.

The fruit we’ve eaten out of hand. But I did bake a batch of Lemon Shortbread Hearts with the lemons.

If you need more ideas, Misfit has a pretty active social media presence where followers share recipes and ideas for using the produce.
