Lime salt is one of the best condiments out there and probably The easiest to make at home.
I tested a couple different “recipes” for lime salt and I’m going to tell you which one is the very best.
(My favorite version involves a grater, a lime and a handful of salt, super easy).

So, a combination of freshly grated lime zest and an equal amounts of sea salt? Sign me up.
I had a couple of inspirations in trying this recipe.
First, I made a round of traditional margaritas, which needed lime salt rims.
But before that, I was at my local food co-op, you know, that bastion of hippies, old and young as well as foodies like myself, and there was a display of over-priced little tins of flavored salts.
I was thinking the flavored salts would make great hostess gifts. Or a good stocking stuffer for the cook in my life.
Then I realized flavored salts are probably super easy to make and probably cost just a song in comparison.
Use a Microplane grater (far left) to remove the zest of one lime.

How to Make Lime Salt
I feel silly posting a recipe card for this but I will.
Lime salt recipes fall into one of two camps.
You either combine equal amounts of fresh lime zest and kosher salt in a small bowl.
Combine fresh lime zest and sea salt in a small bowl.
Or, you combine equal amounts zest and salt and then bake at 250 for 30 minutes, let cool, then store.
I do not recommend the latter method.
Baking the lime salt sucks all the freshness out of the zest and you’re left with a modestly flavored salt.
I want that lime zest to stand up and scream. Lime is a big, bold flavor. Don’t dry it out.
