It’s Almost Pie Day! And in the spirit of Thanksgiving or Pie Day as I like to call it, the Wall Street Journal weekend edition had an article about how pie is enjoying a renaissance of sorts in the U.S.
Chefs are making pies fancier than ever before, in this country anyway, and creating pies with complex layers of flavors.

The link will take you to the article, which includes recipes for Cranberry-Sage Pie, Sweet Potato Pie with Whipped Cream Quenelles, Tartine’s Chocolate-Rye Tart and Caramel Apple Pie, which calls for 4.5 pounds of apples!
Pie has always been a big deal in my family. We’re much more pie eaters than cake eaters. I think that goes along with being cat people. I think dog people eat more cake than cat people do. Don’t ask me why, just a feeling I get.
My mother always made one pie person on Thanksgiving plus one. So, if it was just my parents and I, there were four pies. This is math I can get behind, so I do the same thing with my Thanksgiving celebration. Usually we have pumpkin pie, pecan pie, a citrus like lemon meringue or key lime and then a fruit pie like apple or blueberry.
